New Template and Some Ramblings

While I liked the old template, I think this one is much cleaner and more concise. I've added some of the blogs that I read to my links list as well. I hope everyone likes it.

So I wanted to talk about a few things in my last post, but I didn't get to them. I have some new tunes to suggest as well as some interesting podcasts.

Before I get into the artists, I just finished watching "The Last Waltz", which is the concert documentary with the final performances from The Band. Directed by Martin Scorsese, this film is by far the most entertaining "concert" film I have seen. I have always loved The Band, but got even more into them after talking with my dearly departed friend David. The most interesting thing about the film is not only the concert footage, but the interviews with the members about The Band. If I HAD to complain about anything, it would be that my two favorite songs were not included in the footage (Acadian Driftwood, Chest Fever), although they do show the opening of Chest Fever which just has me salivating for more.

I know I have been "spazing" about My Morning Jacket, but it really is my most played band lately. As I was thinking about that, I thought I would look through my Ipod and see what my top 25 songs were. Obviously MMJ was leading the pack, but the following artists were also up there, which I thought were less well known.

Richard Julian - This guy is VERY folky. And, I LIKE THAT. There I said it!! Being a guitar player myself, I respect this guy tremendously. I stumbled on his newest album at the record store where they had it on one of those listening stations. He is virtually unknown, but does play with Norah Jones on his most recent release, "Slow New York". My favorite songs: "Damn", "If a Heart Breaks", "End of the Line", and "Short Biography", but really the whole album is great and I can listen to it from start to finish.

Justin Jones & The Driving Rain - Bandleader Justin Jones plays more of an alt-country type of music, and I compare him to Ryan Adams. He is a local guy, and plays all around DC and No.VA. My buddy Mike G turned me on to him, and I can't wait to see him. The album that I have is called "Love Verses Heroin", and I really like the whole album as well. My favorite songs: "Honey I Need You", "Louise".

Assembly of Dust - Reid Genauer, previously of Strangefolk, can write great songs plain and simple. Lately the old Strangefolk song "Speculator" from their first album "Lore" has been getting alot of playing time, except it is the live version from the album "Honest Hour", from Reid's new band Assembly of Dust. For some reason these lyrics just really get me: "Sipping beer on aging porches, Crooked walls, built before my birth. Latent heat on the quiet streets and,People sleep and people talk this evening, mm-hmm...This is what I saw"

The Wood Brothers - This is the W in MMW (Medeski, Martin, and Wood), or the bass in the great jazz trio, except Chris Wood is joined by his brother Oliver on guitar and vocals. The album "Ways Not to Lose" is a blend of blues, folk, country and rock, and it works well. My favorite songs: "Luckiest Man", "Chocolate on My Tongue".

Jay Geils, Gerry Beaudoin and The Kings of Strings - This is one of those albums that just works great for background music. In fact, thats how I found it. One of my favorite record stores in town was playing one day as I was browsing their used cd section. I had to ask what it was. I can't really point out any of my favorites because it's just all great! I love to listen to this while playing poker online. Very mellow and relaxing.

So while these bands/artists are some of my "most played", the other thing that I have been listening to incessantly are podcasts. Mostly poker, there are also a few musical podcasts as well.
Ante Up - This is an hour long podcast from two guys from The Tampa Bay Times (Chris and Scott). I put a link to their blog recently. While they don't usually get a ton of top name pros, I find their episodes pretty entertaining since they deal with mostly low limit games. What I REALLY like is that they tend to not JUST talk about No-Limit Hold'em, but other games as well. I think more of these poker podcasts should take note.
ESPN Poker Edge - Phil Gordon hosts this short 15 minute weekly show, that I stumbled on Itunes. I'm not sure if it will go on much after the WSOP. Honestly, it's not the greatest podcast, but i'm such a poker junkie I have to listen to everything. These episodes are always old news, esspecially if you listen to The Circuit (below).
The Circuit - Hosted by Scott Huff, Gavin Smith and Joe Sebok, this Cardplayer magazine sponsored podcast is easily the best around. First of all, during this years WSOP they had a show 5 days a week. Also, this show is on Sirius sattelite radio. They have all of the TOP PROS come in and do 20-30 minute interviews and are very informative, funny and entertaining. They include a "hand of the day", and "poker talk" sections.
Rounders Radio - This is a Canadian hour long radio show that comes on every Sunday night. They usually come on Itunes around Wednesday. They pretty much always have a good top TV pro on and do decent interviews. The main host for this show has a slightly irritating voice, and he says "UHHH" a lot, and messes up peoples names quite a bit.
Pocket Fives - About a 30 minute weekly update on all of the online pros and tournaments. I always get so fired up to come home and play poker online after listening to one of these shows. The consistency of these guys is ridiculous.
Umphreys McGee - UM puts out a podcast every couple of months and it is has always been a live show or portions from a couple of different shows.
NPR's All Songs Considered - A 15 minute episode previewing a very eclectic mix of all kinds of different artists. I really liked one where they played a few songs from a 9:30 Club show featuring The Bad Plus.

Right now, I've been watching the Live Pay Per View special of the WSOP final table. It's been on since 5pm, and now it's 12:30. I must say, it is not what I expected. I thought I might get bored with it, but I am completely riveted. This guy Jamie Gold is probably going to win. I have seen some pretty crazy hands. I am pulling for Allen Cunningham, as is pretty much everyone. Nothing against Gold, but I just don't like his table manner. He just talks too much about his hands, even when there are people still left to act. I soooo pray that Cunningham or Wasick can at least make it interesting. At this point they have a ton of chips to accumulate to even get there. Gold has over 50 million and the closest to him has less than 20. We'll see!

How was the beach....beech?

Ahhh, what a good weekend it was! Thursday, as I said earlier, Mo and I went down to Easton, MD to the Avalon Theatre to see a nice "intimate" Keller Williams show.

It was a general admission show, but we could only score seats about 6 rows back and to the left of the stage. I got a few pictures (that I wasn't supposed to take!) and I guess they came out ok. I even got a little bit of video, but that was a little shaky and illegal! The show was actually pretty great. He played a couple new songs that we had not heard yet, and was more talkative than usual, mostly because he could not "loop" in between songs. The crowd was a little young (thats what you usually get for 18+ shows), and pretty chatty. We had a nice "older" couple sitting next to us that complained a little bit about it, but they were excited nonetheless (they won their tickets).
Here's the setlist:

Friday we got up and headed out to Ocean City for the day. It was a perfect hot and humid day for the beach. I was a little worried that the water would be too cold (and it probably was) to go in to cool off, but I went anyway. I basically froze my balls off for the first 10 minutes and then got used to it. Here's a fun picture from the day

Saturday we (I) bartended at my sister-in-laws Inn where they were holding a wedding reception. For about 1 hour I basically added a drop or two of sweat to every drink I poured since I was outside in the 100 degree heat wearing a longsleeve shirt and tie and black pants. I think we made a little extra in tips because of that though so I really can't complain. We got home Saturday night around 1am after working about 10 hours or so and we just basically laid around the house all of Sunday.

Poker has been an up and down week for me. My Pokerstars account is dwindling, and my UB account has basically been static. The SnG's on PS have seen me just running into monsters and making some poorly timed plays. And, as far as Triple Draw goes, well, I win $10 and lose $10, but just have not gone off for a big score. The games have been pretty steady though.

I will most likely be editing this post later tonight or this weekend because I really want to suggest some more tunes and other things that I think are interesting!
